Laser Tattoo Removal

Got a tattoo that’s become embarrassing or unwanted?
Why not just get it removed?

Q-switched ND Yag lasers are considered by dermatologists to be the most advanced and effective way of removing multi-coloured tattoos and pigmentation with consistently predictable results and little chance of side effects they are widely acknowledged as a gold standard.

How does the procedure work?

The laser delivers light in billionth of a second applying a powerful pulse of energy which is then absorbed by the unwanted tattoo. The resulting heat penetrates through the top layer of skin and shatters the tattoo ink into small pigment particles. Your body's immune system recognises these particles as something that shouldn't be there and gradually absorbs them into the body via the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system flushes out the ink particles affected and naturally disposes of them.

How many treatments does it take to remove a tattoo?

Every tattoo responds differently due to a number of different variables. There are variations in ink colours and their chemical compositions, depth and density of ink placement, skin type and individual immune system factors. Predicting how many treatments any particular tattoo will require is an educated guess. During your consultation, your doctor will make an estimate of the number of tattoo removal sessions needed to remove your tattoo.

How frequently can I return for more treatments?

The ink will continue to evacuate the body for approximately 4-6 weeks. For this reason, treatments are scheduled no closer than 4 weeks apart. A gradual fading of the tattoo occurs over a series of treatments.

What preparation is require before treatment?

A patch test is always needed at least 48 hours before treatment. Please shave the area 24 hours before treatment and avoid any creams, lotions and perfumes. A reduced blood sugar level can make you feel faint or queasy so it is essential that you eat something about an hour before treatment. Sunbathing and Sunbeds should be avoided at least 4 weeks before treatment.

How is the treatment carried out?

Protective eye glasses are provided and the skin will be cleaned, the laser head is then passed over the tattoo releasing quick pulses of light, a clicking noise is often heard as the ink particles break down. An instant whitening or blistering of the skin is seen after treatment, but this generally fades quite quickly. The area will be tender for up to 48 hours. A bandage or patch may be used to protect the area. Initially the tattoo is unlikely to look any different but will start to fade over the following 4-8 weeks as the body disperses it.

Aftercare

It is important to keep the tattoo covered with a bandage/dressing for the first day. Usually, it feels like a mild sunburn and does not hurt unless rubbed against. Between your treatments, it is important to keep the tattoo covered from the sun to prevent hyper-pigmentation (darkening). You will receive detailed instructions during your appointment and an aftercare sheet to take home with you.
